Why are macadamia nuts so expensive?
The main reason is the slow harvesting process. Although there are ten species of macadamia trees, only 2 produce quality, edible nuts, and it takes seven to ten years for the trees to mature and produce nuts.
Nuts are harvested only five to six times a year, usually by hand.
Macadamia nuts have a thick shell, which is extremely strong and requires special equipment to remove it, usually the shell is removed before sale, the kernels are sold, but unshelled nuts are also available on the market.
The shell also makes it difficult to distinguish between ripe and unripe nuts, making the harvesting process time- and resource-intensive.
